Kaukauwa follows Peter, a gentle and often-bullied boy who feels small and out of place at school. On a reluctant school camp, Peter escapes into his love of dragons and secretly searches the mountain caves for a dragon egg. When he eventually discovers one and brings it home, the egg becomes a source of comfort, confidence and courage. With the support of his kind grandfather, Peter cares for the egg while slowly building friendships, learning new skills and finding his voice.
When the egg finally hatches, the dragon Kaukauwa – small, magical and able to communicate with Peter – symbolises the inner strength Peter has been developing. Through friendship, guidance and self-belief, Peter grows from a timid child into someone more resilient, connected and confident.
The story offers rich opportunities to explore themes of bullying, belonging, courage, friendship, resilience and the importance of supportive adults. It can help students reflect on empathy, inclusion and the ways we can empower others who may feel isolated.
