‘Kaukauwa’
Inspired by my time teaching in Fiji, the story ‘Kaukauwa’ follows a young boy named Peter as he discovers the power of confidence. In a primary school classroom filled with children from many cultures- where the Fijian boys were big, bold, and rugby mad - I saw firsthand how encouragement could help children overcome worries, build real confidence, and even stand up to bullies. In this tale, a touch of magic sparks Peter’s courage, but its message is universal: when we believe in ourselves, our confidence can grow in remarkable ways. I have found that older primary school students enjoy reading this tale while young students enjoy having it read to them.

A charming and imaginative piece — it really highlights how storytelling can open up a world of curiosity and wonder, especially when a book like this blends simple narrative with deeper meaning, encouraging young readers to explore ideas through characters, culture, and imagination. Stories like this create space for reflection while still feeling light and engaging, and that sense of creativity and gentle discovery, sometimes loosely described in different contexts with phrases like slots of paradise, reflects how powerful storytelling can be in shaping perspective from an early age.
